When my ‘Class of 2017’ Air Force Academy Cadet told me he needed a blanket because he was cold at night, I decided to make him a quilt. It came out great, so I posted a photo of the quilt on the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) Parent pages, stating that "Kahleb won't be cold anymore!" That’s when my phone started to ring from parents who wanted one for their Cadets. I personalize each quilt with a squadron and name patch and graduation year, but some families sent me other patches to personalize their quilts. Many quilts display two and even three generations of military service!
Now, more than 650 quilts later, I cover all the service academies and military branches, and even fill orders for quilts marking milestones like retirement, graduation, sponsor-family, weddings and memorials. I pray over every quilt for their recipient’s protection, health, and happiness.
As Cadets/Midshipman cannot have many items in their rooms, the quilts serve as a nice reminder of home and can be stored out of sight for inspections. When more than nine quilts are ready for delivery, I sometimes fly to the Service Academy to personally present each Cadet/Midshipman with their quilt. Parents receive photos of the presentations, and my Virtual Scrapbook is displayed on my table at the Parent's weekend Vendor Fair. These presentations have become a tradition. The joy I get from seeing the smiles on Cadet’s/Midshipman’s faces when they receive their personalized quilt is priceless.
